Pugin on serving Architecture to the English masses

The great architect Pugin explained that it was not sufficient to tell the Enlgish that he designed buildings the way he did because he liked pointed arches...and that he designed that way because he loved the geometry of it...no, he would tell them,
he would make his Pietish excuse and don his mask of  righeousness
"I design this way because pointed arches are holier than round ones and spires will take us closer to God than round arches and domes will.
