Around Bob Dylan (his nom de chanteur) there can be an ingratiating attitude which can descend into
mushy unction. Born Robert Zimmerman a Jewish loner from Hibbing, Minnesota, he adopted the name
Dylan, some say, from the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
Now as much as I like Dylan, who doesn't, there is a body of opinion who feels in the words of Christopher Hitchens (Love, Poetry & War) that Dylan has licensed the suspicion that he has been putting people on. Yes, taking them for a ride and starting wild goose chases for arcane and esoteric readings of his songs, that are, well, not there.
Even if such suspicions has some basis, I am still an ungrudging admirer of Bob Dylan. Yes, I am.
'Hey Mr Tambourine man...my hands can't feel to grip, my toes...wait only for my boot heels to be wandering.'
Great, isn't it... now, what exactly does that mean?
