A glimmer of a smile

that is a confidence, not a Mona Lisa like ambiguity

but her smile is a risk, a hope, a multitude of feeling in her regard

that disambiguates

to tell you she is fine

although all this is an innocence, hurry up!

to wear this mask

is a task

and will not disguise

the irresolution that deeply lies

as she unfolds her unease around this custom of vanity and sentiment

now as common as the breeze

but she also has a defiant bravery, which is her solace

So she stands there accommodating this epiphenomenon,
this current charade as the gaggle of tourist, squeaking out their delight eke out representations that


they believe will represent reality,

then an uninvited thought of the Spanish donkeys of her youth that brayed

in fields not far from this very spot

so she stands there

hurry up, hurry up, hurry up
