We are on Spaceship Earth safe and protected by our biosphere. I don't think so.

Insulated on the good ship Earth we sail on, well...
this metaphor rather overstates the degree to which the biosphere is
hospitable to humans.
Nor is the biosphere (the ecosystem comprising the entire earth and
the living organisms that inhabit it) a great preserver of
species. The average rate of extinction since the beginning of life on
Earth has been approximatly ten (10) species per year. The net result
is that the overwhelming majority of species 99.9% that has ever existed
on Earth are now extinct.  As Charles Darwin lamented all these
species were sentient beings. i.e. they felt pain and hurt.
These extinct species did not cause their demise by overloading the
biosphere, they were wiped out, some by mass extinction events (the Dinosaurs),
others were wiped out by the biosphere itself, by means of natural
disasters, climate changes and evolutionary changes.
To design something, Earth, and get a 99.9 % score on the extinction of its
inhabitants over billions of years is...
Well, how would you describe it?
