We mammals evolved to seek safety in numbers. A mammal relaxes and lowers its guard in the safety of a herd or pack or group, but it must run when its herd mates run to survive. If a mammal insisted on seeing the predator for itself, it would be weeded out of the gene pool. We are descended from mammals who trusted their mates' alarm calls.
