Herodotus says that the Scythians were hard to defeat because they had no cities or settled forts: ‘they carry their houses with them and shoot with bows from horseback … their dwellings are on their wagons. How then can they fail to be invincible and inaccessible for others?’
To have a home is to become vulnerable. Not just to the attacks of others, but to our own adventures in alienation. Will I go out....I have not been out for three days. So what if I am alienated from greater society. I will stay here, and alienate myself in my little fortress.
Next week, |I am hardly home, and worry about the fact that I am hardly there, should have lift a light on, or the radio.
Then go to Barcelona for 3 days. will my home be there when I get back, will it be vandalised, stripped bare?
Having a home makes one vulnerable and of course secure, it could be argued.
