We
are not merely passive recipients of top-down oppressions, but collude in
effectively monitoring and disciplining ourselves and others through our (often
unexamined) uses of language
Above all, language loses its privileged
position and becomes, in its turn, a historical form coherent with the density
of its own past. In short, it means communication plus its context. In
general, we think we know what we mean by what we say, but have only the most
fragmentary awareness of the contexts and forces under which that communication
occurs. However, these are a major part of the "meaning".
