Someone insults you and you are deeply hurt.
You confer with friends and they are forgiving
‘He didn’t mean to’, ‘He hadn’t realized’, ‘He didn’t know’; ‘He couldn’t help it’.
They invite us to see the injury as one for which he was not fully, or at all, responsible.
Then there is the other group of people who claim, ‘He has been under very great strain recently’, ‘He’s only a child’, ‘He is hopelessly impulsive ‘His mind has been systematically perverted’, ‘... purely compulsive behaviour on his part’.
Uber forgiveness accompanies the phrase ‘He wasn’t himself’ although having a comic element, excuses the man completely
for what is the point of having a resentment against a man who is not 'himself'.
