John Lennon sang, "I am just a jealous guy..."
We are instructed by teachers at school that Iago in Othello is racked by 'jealousy' '...that green eyed monster.' There are many other examples in the pantheon of jealousy.
However is jealousy the right word for our emotions?
Surely what underlies 'jealousy' is 'envy'. I am not jealous that someone I deeply care for shows affection or is shown aftection to and by others, I am envious.
Iago is not 'jealous' that someone else has usurped him for his desired place in someone's bed -
he is envious.
