Philosophers, especially 'philosophers have a great deal to say about nothing .Consider the
concept of ‘Nothing’,is it possible to conceive such a concept? For how can one conceive of something that does not exist.
Physicists take everything away, and what might be termed nothing, they term it a 'vacuum'.
Quantum weirdness has made the Nothing known as the 'vacuum' substantial. According to the uncertainty principle, empty space is boiling with so-called virtual particles zipping in and out of existence on borrowed energy. Measurements of a small quantum suction called the Casimir effect, have validated the idea.
Non-existence by its own definition cannot be and therefore there is no alternative to existence. We exist necessarily may be a justified response to that perennial question, ‘Why are we here?’ It is pointed out that one of the great projects in the history of modern thought has been the attempt to achieve the untainted perspective, the Archimedean view of reality. Following Thomas Nagel, The View From Nowhere .
But there is no view from the Archimedean nowhere (nothing) for our observations of the temporal are constrained by being within the temporal.
Such observations are unlikely to put theologians out out business, so I hand nothing over to the great reflector Augustine as he intensifies his thoughts: . “What was God doing before he made heaven and earth? If he was at rest and doing nothing, why did he not continue to do nothing for ever more? Just as he had always done in the past."(10:12).
Like Augustine, we too must wrestle with the aporia called time. Let us propose we think of ‘nothing’ in order to think of time as beginning and ending. To conceive of time in this way is to envisage it being surrounded by nothingness. In order for there to be a time before time, this time would still be a created time, since God is the maker of all time. By such calculation God is the creator of nothing and yet, nothing cannot exist. I told your there was a great deal to say about 'nothing'.
