How do we come to terms with living in a purposeless cosmos?
Once we were the centre of the cosmos; now dethroned,
Once the self was the centre of our being and now that has been usurped through advances in neuroscience and Foucauldian French theory. So now another fall for us, the fall from ourselves.
(In passing - the search to know oneself is a bit of a fools’ errand, because the self continuously changes, and keeps ahead of firm description).
It would appear that we are in this blind and purposeless cosmic process and in the face of this, we strive to salvage our specially assigned status in the Universe.
So how do we overcome our sense of futility, one way is pointed by David Eagleman in his book Incognito, ‘...what is lost in egocentrism is gained in awe and wonder.’
