'Cognitive reserve' and Alzheimer's. Why some people have it but don't suffer from it.

Many people will die with cancer, but not of it.
Similarly, as David Eagleman (Incognito The Secret
Lives of the Brain) points out, many people are found
to have the neural ravages of Alzheimer's disease upon
autopsy - but interestingly they never showed the
symptoms while they were alive.
How can this be? It turns out that such people
continued to challenge their brains by staying active
in their careers and carrying out any other activities
that kept their neural populations well exercised.
As a result of staying mentally vigorous they built what
neuropsychologists call 'COGNITIVE RESERVE'.
So if you are 'getting on', join that Bowling Club, learn that language
go to that dancing class, you might feel silly but your
brain will appreciate it.
