
Through out history, literature and art have been in effect circumscribed zones in which non-utilitarian ‘higher’ values have been maintained; domains for the playing out of avant garde transgressions.
If you take this view, which I do, the ideological formations’ of art and culture have no essential or eternal status. They are changing and contestable. After all, cultures do not hold still for their portraits.
