The mob or the herd and their irresistable disires

 There are many  citizens (let's call them that)

who are by the excitation of the mob for they have an irresistable desire for the delinquency and volatility of the herd, especially when it is about

to charge- and if the herd charges off the cliff face

so be it

In the reality of the day (the Court Room) no longer protected the uniform obedience of the mob/herd, they lapse into tearful lamentation and

reconsideration

from what the mob/herd promised to liberate them
