We live in a culture of disclosure, from AA, shopper's anonymous to over-worker anonymous
onwards and ever onwards, there is the cult of disclosure and of course the salve of public confession, "...I never thought I would say this in public...some secrets you think you will take to your grave....but I know I am among friends so I am going to tell about myself...' and the
self justifying drone goes on, the public purging; the manipulative pseudo sincerity....
"Did you actually do that then?"
"Yes, and I don't have to explain, for I was in the grip of a compulsive addiction."
"Oh...that's alright then, for you, but not for the person you did it too."
"But I have forgiven myself for those things...."
"Do you actually have that kind of power...to forgive yourself."
What has happened in this 'Oprah' (thank you the good old adolescent US of A)
is that reticence has been annihilated, for the sake of the trite banal disclosing of yourself;
for these days everyone has their confessional niche. Peter Cheevers
