Francois Furet the French historian,  selected for Volume II Grant Wood's American Gothic, the famously dour couple, reflecting sour puritan resolve.  Furet pointed to this as another American short circuit: for in "impeding citizens from conceiving of any possibility whatever," the constraint of the puritan sensibility "places an obstacle in front of... the revolutionary spirit, this negation of democracy in the name of democracy."'
