Dreaming and daydreaming are both conscious states.
So how do they differ?
We don't know what Consciousness is - yet we try to explain it.
As neuro science advances folk psychology (all those apriori beliefs and truths) retreats.
To talk of 'left and right' brain is normal today this would not have been the case a decade or so back. Volition has already been nailed
by technology, i.e. our actions take place before we believe they take place, putting a scientific shaft through the free will/determinism argument.
