understanding their distinctiveness

identity formations typically aim to secure the political freedom of a specific constituency FOR THEY FEEL marginalized within its larger context.

Members of that constituency, LET US SAY THE WOKE' CLAIMANTS, 'i AM OPRESSED ERGO i EXIST

assert or reclaim ways of understanding their distinctiveness that challenge dominant characterizations, with the goal of greater self-determination for they do not wish to be peculiarly vulnerable to what they feel is cultural imperialism

thinkers agree that the notion of identity has become indispensable to contemporary political discourse, at the same time as they concur that it has troubling implications for models of the self, political inclusiveness, and our possibilities for solidarity and resistance.

Charles Taylor argues that the modern identity is characterized by an emphasis on its inner voice and capacity for authenticity—that is, the ability to find a way of being that is somehow true to oneself  which begs the question what is

oneself?

Can you not see common sense? come the cries

Making sense of such interpretive gaps depends on methods that recognize the divergence between dominant epistemic accounts and subjugated knowledges
