Why does your 'ideal' self berate your 'real' self?

The ideal self constantly berates the real self for not living up to its claims, demands and exhortations. 

But where does masochism  come from?  Why do we choose to dissect ourselves, surely dissection belongs in the Laboratory of our school days.

Is it that we imagine the ideal self in a self denominating way as ‘a hero, a genius, a supreme lover, a saint, a god’ when in fact is human, all to human in its limitations.
