‘I think, therefore I’m not.’

In Jean Paul Sartre's short story The Wall  the child he begins to imagine his parents are not his parents, just actors playing those roles – ‘or else, these really were Papa and Mama, but during the day they played a role and at night they were quite different.’

 Later still, he modifies his question of reality. Perhaps it’s not that people, including himself, are acting. They just don’t exist, thus elegantly reversing Descartes’s proposition: ‘I think, therefore I’m not.’  He read Freud and is delighted to find he has a complexan he is normal for normality is a sort of fortress or refuge.
