'The vacuum that wasn;t filled with Human Rights

The 1990s were prodigal with illusions generated by the collapse of communist regimes,  The ethical vacuum had been filled by human rights, which were entrusted, as Moyn wrote, with ‘the grand political mission of providing a global framework for the achievement of freedom, identity and prosperity’. It was in 1999 that Tony Blair (at this juncture probably the most despised politician in the UK) announced in Chicago: ‘We are all internationals now, whether we like it or not.’ Western values and interests had miraculously merged, and it was imperative to ‘establish and spread the values of liberty, the rule of law, human rights and an open society’ – by force, if necessary. As a result of this brave new world politicking we got the Trump administration who referred to Human Rights'as a cesspit.
