Louis Althusser was never likely to face any charge for the murder of his wife, since he is, in English parlance, ‘unfit to plead’, only underlines the deep tragedy of this affair. The suggestion that he is now also suffering from a physical ailment which affects his respiration, so that having, according to his own statement, strangled his wife, he can now be said to be strangling himself, adds a further, intense sadness to the story, which will be deeply felt by all those who knew this gentle, reflective and withdrawn man intellectual who had consistently played down the value of individual human endeavour had, it seemed, committed a crime of passion.
