The mind, which hates randomness, looks for causes and agency everywhere. Some argue that this explains the seemingly universal human tendency to believe in the supernatural. This is a product of evolution: relying on a coherent and automatic understanding of the world is more conducive to survival than devoting energy to doubt and evaluation. Better to run when you see what looks like a predator than to stay put and calculate the odds it will catch you.
