Althusser, For Marx (1979) argued that the ‘subject’ was always
being interpolated, by ideological state apparatuses.8 The media
could be said to be one of those apparatuses. It interpolates, or more often
than not, megaphones the subject constantly. It is a background noise which you
can never turn off. It constantly suggests how to think and what
to think. In this respect a present day self becomes a set of nodes through
which institutional power relations are transmitted. In effect we have become
terminals. In this regard, although coming perilously close to a rant, some
even go as far as to say the real virtual terrorists are the media.
