Are you one of those people who sits alone at the bar, and feeling at least you are interesting as you sip your drink and feeling that you are outside the common herd. Yes, you are an outsider that folk myth of Hollywood and literature. ?As you sit at the bar alone do you think, as I used to think, that they are thinking who is that interesting looking guy at the bar, what is he thinking 'the inevitability of our finitude. For me it was despite my reiterated disclaimers that I JUST WANT TO BE ALONE, I was desperately seeking someone.
What I was really looking for was a
Maître à penser; (master for thinking) a teacher whom one chooses, in order to learn not just a set of facts or point of view, but a way of thinking.
So for me the 'outsider' myth of being an interesting type, can be a bit wearing.
For real outsiders, as Adam Phillips points out, don’t keep telling you that they are outsiders by your behaviour, you just by chance do something unusual and other people call you an 'outsider.
