A sane reason for an insane act

Inthe last centurey there was remarkable letter from a man called Ernest Clark to the editor of the Daily Chronicle.

Clark explains in his letter that ‘only the transcendental and aesthetic in life are worth our thought,’ and since they are crowded out by ‘the ugliness and vile monotony’ of his existence, he will have shot himself by the time his letter is received.

And apparently he did.

Stay away from such mono-maniacal, self dramatising which is riven in our culture

O that this too too solid flesh would melt,
Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!
Or that the Everlasting had not fix’d
His canon ’gainst self-slaughter! O God! O God!
How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this world!
Fie on’t! O fie! ’tis an unweeded garden,
That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature
