Welfare/Entitlement a thing of the past

Janet Daley writes 'Present entitlements and universal benefits must be regarded as a thing of the past: that it is not only the workless dependency culture that needs to be dismantled, but also the system of automatic payments, which has expanded to encompass the entire population regardless of need.

The welfare system has become a divisive force, creating resentments between those who are thought to be overly dependent on it and those who are trying not to be.

Maybe losing the universal monolithic welfare state isn’t bad news at all. If ever there was a historic moment to make that argument, this is it.
