At the planning stage for the next series the producers sit round discussing the array of problems that will be covered in their soap opera. There will be overeating, undereating, homosexuality, pilfering from shops, abortion,
alcoholism, drug use, self harming....and the usual displays of the emotionally wounded.
At another table sit the real money men, the corporations who will decide whether to back another series.
The produceers are under pressure, to produce. Emoional problems are then packaed into 30 minutes segments, where they are introduced and resolved.
Teenagers watch this and more often than not come away with an impression that an emtional problem, say alcolism can be solved in a very short time span.
Thsi is deeply misleading as the real world is just not like that.
