in the economy. Under Thatcher we broke our unions while the French repeatedly
caved in to theirs and still do. In the UK we deregulated and espoused the economic philosophy
of the New Right which goes with it; while in France they insisted on the need for a
‘European social model’ and continued with generous welfare payments.
