I feel really 'down' and then the phone rings

Consider what happens when you’re self-absorbed, worrying or brooding, and the telephone rings to temporarily interrupt your thinking. You have been distracted by an 'external' experience.

You put the phone down and feel temporarily better but when the distraction of the telephone call passes, gradually  you find yourself becoming engrossed in self absorbed anxious or depressing thoughts once again.

It’s therefore of great value for many people to develop more awareness and control over their attention and thought processes by:
Reducing excessive self-focused attention, over-thinking; worry and rumination, and other forms of morbid over-thinking.

and you do this in the first instance by awareness, that is by mproving conscious control over your attention and thought processes in general.
