Is all biography ultimatly fiction?

Patient, patient ...ah the Latin root for
'patient', one who suffers‟. A friend of mine sighs and then addresses me.

"Don't you think that when patients decide to consult a psychiatrist they are in a way expressing a desire to create a new story for themselves?"

"Hmm, don't rightly know...I suppose that is true."

"But of course if you have a story like mine, can you change it. Can you change the story that is you?"

"Surely you can change by revising your story."

"But |I am constantly  revising my story, I am this now, I am no longer that. All my life I have been altering in my favour, but even when I modify it to my own detriment, the humility I derive is a kind of personal bonus."

"So what you are saying is that self love is subtle, self deluding."
"Yes, to the extent that you have to say - all biography, all tinkering with that narrative about yourself  is ultimately fiction."

"Sorry, don't accept that at all, far too passive for me."
