On Realism and Romanticism and the rage of Caliban

In Shaekspeare's play The Tempest, After his (Caliban's) island becomes occupied by Prospero and his cohort, Caliban is forced
into servitude. He is referred to as a a freckled monster, and he is the only human inhabitant of the island that is otherwise "not honour'd with a human shape."

In Richard Ellmans biography Oscar Wilde, Wlde comments as
follows: "The nineteenth century dislike of Realism is the rage of Caliban
seeing his own face in a glass. The nineteenth century dislike of Romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his face in a glass.

Good old Oscar.
