If money is not backed by something such as the Gold Standard, there is a collapse of guarantees and frames of reference, a rupture between sign and thing, undermining representation and ushering in the age of what post-modernists might term 'the floating signifier'.
After all, a dollar can only be exchanged for another dollar, it is not, as it formerly was, backed by gold.
The pound or dollar you hold in your hand can then be argued to be no more than a floating signifier.
