Inscribed prominently at the forecourt of the Temple of
Apollo at Delphi is the admonition, to 'know thyself'.
Yet the same token as 'to understand' needs a new
definition of what it is to 'understand'; to 'know thyself'
needs a new definition of what it is to 'know'.
'Knowing yourself', with the advent of the neurosciences
requires us to accept that consciousness (the self)
is no more than a store room (very small part) in the
massive department store which is the brain.
And this store room (your 'self') has very little control
over the reality constucted for you.
As the sciences advance that Greek invocation
to 'know thyself' has to be reasessed.
