How the avant garde became 'entre’ and then ‘derrière’. 

The Parisian salon was the breeding ground for the avant garde (a military term ). However in time, the avant garde came to be seen as ‘entre’ and through Andy Warhol’s ‘autistic stare’ 

finally became ‘derrière’.
