Alisdair MacIntrye argues in After Virtue  that the vague notion of  'utility' infects any notion of doing good and more particularly the new conception of the virtue of  benevolence. Comparing it to its 18th Century counterpart he states '...benevolence as a virtue became a license for almost any kind of manipulative intervention in the affair of  others.'
