Very rarely you read an article and the critique is so totalising in its theory and criticism that we feel we can add nothing, so we just nod and agree. The author has immobilised us. For our critical capacities are paralysed and our impulses of revolt are negated. We are paralysed dialectically, demobilised we surrender to passivity and helplessness the author has obliterated our possibility of action.
The author then has won, but also lost. For s/he has negated the reader who feels she can offer nothing further. And in inducing this state of impotence in his audiencce, the author disempowers herself.
