We can learn not to be afraid
If you do nothing, this disorder is unlikely to disappear! Phobia is a reflex fear that escapes reasoning and does not subside on its own – except sometimes in children, whose very common fear of the dark gradually fades. When you suffer from a phobia, you misjudge the danger, the one you are actually facing or the one you anticipate.
When you're afraid of flying, you sometimes panic before even entering the cabin. The same with cats: the idea of going to dinner with your neighbor who has several of them paralyzes you.
The more afraid you are, the more you avoid.
You then take the car or invite your neighbor to dinner yourself. But this way you don't change the danger message and it ends up imprinted in the brain. Freeing yourself from a phobia therefore involves a proactive approach: you must give yourself the means to relearn how to function differently, from a behavioral, cognitive and emotional point of view.
