If quantum states represent something physically real, what sort of thing is it?

 If  quantum states represent something physically real, what sort of thing is it? 

This is the question of the ontological construal of quantum states. 

Another question is whether a description in terms of quantum states can be taken as, in principle, complete, or whether it must be supplemented by different ontology.
