The writers' mistake of using the audience as the great listener

Arthur Miller is a prime example in AFTER THE FALL he employs the audience  as the great listner to the garrulous monologue of the psychiatric confessional.

Contemporary man as Mailer portrays him seem stuck in a confessional of self exoneration, we are witnessing psychiatric charity at its most beneficent, where psychiatry elevates personal tragedy and demeans public ones, exonerates the audience and the central character and issues to the central character and by implication the audience a moral solvent for all excruciating memories.
