So-called 'wet markets' in many parts of the world are still open despite their role in spreading novel diseases

Less than two weeks ago, authorities in Port Klang, Malaysia, uncovered a consignment of six tons of pangolin scales, hidden beneath bags of cashew nuts. This is their largest ever such seizure, probably equating to around 15,000 animals poached from the wild and killed. Despite the overwhelming evidence that Covid-19 has been transmitted from wildlife – and very probably pangolins – to humans, the trade in dead and living wild animals is still going on. And it is happening on a vast scale.

At the same time, media reports suggest that wildlife markets have been opening up again in China. It is bad enough that in Guilin, South West China, observers have described a market full of cats and dogs in filthy cages being sold for slaughter.
