Premodern ideological regimes exemplified what Lacan calls in Seminar XVII the discourse of the master. In these authoritarian regimes, the word and will of the King or master was sovereign the source of political authority, with no questions asked. Her/His subjects, in turn, are supposed to know the edicts of the sovereign and the Law ignorance was no excuse.
