The limits of the Delphic Oracle's 'Know Thyself'

For the Greeks, with their polytheistic paganism,  the 'Human' was unthinkable without its inhuman background.  To be cut off from the Gods was to be a soul adrift, when the Delphic Oracle
exhorted the Greeks to 'know thyself, for the Greeks passing under that sign, Greeks accepted that
knowing oneself was unknowable without referring to the inhuman (Gods) and divine.
