Shakespeare's ending to King Lear is a stark message to the soppy, sugar coated language of Hollywood in King Lear he assaults its ending with that extraordinary psychological violence in which the very idea of a satisfactory (let alone a happy) ending is exploded, with an incendiary emotional violence that would have made even Samuel Beckett happy.
