Human beings need ritual and it is though these rituals we express the human need.
A friend of mine attends AA (Alcoholics anonymous) He tells one that they read from a big book, go around the room admitting their alcoholism, at the end they get in a circle and hold hands chanting a get better message.
Apart from the herd aspect, safety in numbers, one might argue here that these people are engaged in an act of theatre in which congregational identity is formed by stylised repetition of acts. This might apply Freemason. more conventional religions - in all cases it is in effect, religion’s forming of identity through performance
