To find out what a representation might conceal or depend on can only be part of the discredited project of Western metaphysics. Deep into the bone, so deep that we are dealing not with a question of intellectual “influence” but of the very element which this work inhabits, has sunk the notion that essence and appearance are one. And that this means, in truth: all is appearance. So that however often materiality, the body, or the very fluids and excrements themselves, are mentioned, they float in the comforting no-place of a cultural idealism.
