On recalling an event in our past

The effect of trauma is to sponsor symbolic repetition, not symbolic elaboration’(I like this we should elaborate on the past because we are different than we were in the past)  – it is as though, from a psychoanalytic point of view, the future can only be described as, at best, a sophisticated replication of the past, the past in long trousers. (or undiluted Freudianism) we should be cognisant that the past upon recall is full of the potholes in our memory, selectivity and bias etc...if the past is undigested and just regurgitated it is that which will always return.
