The most terrible drug of all - ourselves, which we take in solitude

Addiction is now the language in which older discourses of temptation, indulgence, temperance and redemption are conducted.

So let us thank the good old adolescent USA for that, let us give thank to them, for Oprah, Chat Shows,
12 Step programmes, started by well documented flakes in the US and  which has spread its creepy tentacles world wide and its 'programme' talk is now de rigeur. Let us give thanks to all those 12 year old boys from Silicon Valley who now know just about every aspect of our lives and with the dollar signs sparkling in their eyes will soon have an Orwellian insight into the air we breathe.  Isn't that great?
Thank you America...for Googling us, for Twttering us for Facebooking us (not the childishenss of the names, all the better to infantalie us.

So let me trawl back to a towering figure for help in our 2014 plight to offer an insight on where we might be today.
Benjamin proposed that in the modern era we have also become addicted to what he called ‘that most terrible drug – ourselves – which we take in solitude’.
