We are living in an isolation that would have been unimaginable to our ancestors and yet we have never been more accessible. We live now in a world where we do not have to be 'out' of contact for a fraction of a second.
It is not the internet freeway, but drab cul-de-sacs that make up the 'global village'.
There we sit transfixed by the glare of a screen, hungering for a response.
In 1950 American households 10% contained one person.
Today it is 30%. It is not just isolation that is shooting up the graph but more importanly it is lonliness.
Lonlieness and being alone are not the same thing. Crowded partiers can be hell. lonliness is not a matter of external conditions it is a psychological state
and lonliness is what people in the Western world pursue. With money you flee to the suburbs, spend more time in your car, lonliness is a by product of national appetite for independence.
So is this increasing lonliness caused by all those 12 year old billionaires from Silicon Valley. the answer is a resounding yes, we live more and more in an Oprah
world of juvenilia or adolescent 12 step programes culled from Buddhism by well documented flakes. We have outsourced the task of every day caring to Oprah adolescents.
Problem is you are paying a price as you communicate for hours on the net
and the adivertisemnest bombard you as your cup of Cocoa.
If you feel you are connecting with others on Twitter, Facebook, Google, think again internet communication only ersatz communication.
Lonlieness not only affect the brain but the basic process of DNA transcription. For when you are lonely - your whole body is lonely!
