In Thomas Aquinas' writing there is an ego less anonymity, for he effaces himself in his deadpan, meticulous, writing so as not to allow personality to obtrude between the reader and the truth. Whereas, St Paul and Augustine weave themselves into their every word, Aquinas is ‘the almost wholly invisible saint’, a master of the disappearing act. Yet there is the argument, as there always is, that his inconspicuousness is itself a form of holiness
